Sebastian came to us via the Food And Finance High School in Manhattan and will be entering his senior year graduating in 2017. Chef Treva is a former teacher of FFHS and is currently a member of their Advisory Board so she love working with such dedicated students.
Growing up in Astoria and cooking with his mother, as well as the expert training from the FFHS, Sebastian came to BeeHive Oven with a solid culinary foundation. He quickly became an important member of the team and we ran him through the paces.
So, what does an intern do here at BeeHive Oven? Well, a little bit of everything!
In the back of the house (thats restaurant talk for everything that happens behind the scenes, primarily in our kitchen), he put his excellent knife skills to good use, like here where he made our signature Welcome Plate. He was also part of the biscuit-dmaking team, getting into the kitchen at 7am and helping to bake trays and trays of biscuits. Working at a restaurant means being a jack of all trades, so when the ice machine broke, Sebastian helped John with the repairing.
In the front of the house (everything that happens in the dining room, primarily done by our servers and bartenders), Sebastian learned what its like to take orders, make drinks, and run food while having a light and welcoming attitude.
Sebastian has a great work ethic and incredibly positive attitude, so he fit into the Hive very well. The internship was 180 hours, and he said several time that he really enjoyed the experience.
The team here at BeeHive Oven felt honored to share with Sebastian things he can't learn in the classroom and also show him that you can have fun while doing it. . . even if it’s makin’ the gravy!
